Communications is at the heart of any political campaigns. Deciding what to say and figuring out how to make sure people hear it is the essence of campaigning.

As a result, campaigns’ communications offices tend to be centers of activity — in constant contact with the candidate, working closely with every other part of the campaign operation, picking up information from conversations with the media.

The key to success in this hectic environment — in addition to such personal characteristics as patience, persistence and wit — is a keen understanding of three dynamics: the elements of the campaign message, the shape of the media environment, and the composition of the electorate. All of your work stems from these three dynamics.

This guide will start with a review of those areas, before moving on to a discussion of how to put together a campaign communications plan, and execute that strategy on a day-to-day basis.
