We’d like to think a campaign is all about big ideas, but it’s not. It’s also about the nitty-gritty business of making sure every detail gets taken care of. A good campaign runs smoothly in large part due to great administrative work. Paying attention to details allows a campaign to maximize its efforts, maintaining focus on the candidate and the message, and avoiding office problems.
A campaign lasts for several grueling months. Every day, staff and volunteers make fundraising phone calls until their voices are hoarse. They knock on thousands of doors, request thousands of signatures and face dogs, opposing voters and extreme weather.
This must be constantly in your mind as you set up office procedures. The office exists as support for what is going on in all aspects of the campaign. You must remember that it is in the best interest of the campaign to be as accommodating as possible to those in the field. You take care of the technicalities, and they’ll take care of getting you those votes. This should never be forgotten or confused.
